I have a 1999 YZF600R, and it is the nicest bike I've ever owned. It is great to commute to work on (I have a 30 mile round trip), I never have a sore butt or sore wrists like you get on most sports bikes. It is good on gas, fast, comfortable on long trips, great on back roads, very very good on back-roads! Get good tires and most bikes will have to go well to keep up with you! It is good on parts, servicing prices aren't too bad really. I've only had to replace the brake pads on mine so far, apart from that I've left it standard and love it. It's a really fun bike with a great price, you don't need to spend $10,000 to have a beautiful bike that is fast and functional!!!!
Buy one and enjoy, like I did! Way to go Yamaha, I'll try your YZF-R6 next, if it's better than this, its gotta be good!
