I owned a 2001 Suzuki Volusia 800 for less than a year. It was reliable, looked great, and was comfortable, but it is NOT a freeway friendly bike. Acceleration was acceptable up to 55-60 mph, but it strained to go much faster. Top speed was 75-80 mph riding downhill with a strong breeze blowing behind me! The shaft drive on the bike is very smooth but the gearing is absolutely horrible. The only way to remedy this is to find a donor VL1500 and swap out the drivetrain. This is an expensive solution to a problem that shouldn’t have existed in the first place. Overall, the only people that I’d recommend this to are ones that want a highway cruiser. Around town or on 55mph highways, the bike is great - I have no complaints. For any significant jaunts that include freeway riding above 55-60 mph, I strongly advise against the 800 and would look for a 1500 instead.

The Suzuki 800 is a fun and dependable bike however the older bikes can no longer be repaired at the dealerships because Suzuki as well as Yamaha no longer make parts and dealerships won't install non-OEM parts. For example side panels, fenders and gas tanks are very difficult to find after market and OEMs are no longer made for many older models. After market extra capacity gas tanks are still available. Check your local dealer to insure they still service the year model you wish to purchase. Or learn to DIY. Honda seems to be the best for older serviced models but even for the honda rebel honda no longer make gas tanks, side panels and fenders for the cruiser series. For restoration enthusiasts new networks need to be established to exchange parts. SAFE RIDING, ALWAYS WEAR A HELMET! 😎

I have owned this bike since 2005, it is a 2003. I purchased from an older gentleman in his early 70's. He had a dream of riding to Sturgis and the year before he did so. After that trip, the bug left him and he decided to sell. Here is where my wife steps in. She saw the add and arranged to meet the gentleman in a neutral location. She tricked me into go and when I got there she talked me into a test ride. I took the bike out, mind you I was use to riding a GL650 Silverwing of 1983 persuasion. So the power...Wow, the Handling... Wow. When I got back from test riding I asked the guy, "how big is it?" he stated that it was 800CC. I said "no way." while I was out riding the bike my wife was negotiating. She got the bike for 3500 dollars, mind you this was a two year old bike with 7k miles on the odometer. I road it home with a big old smile on my face. Owned for 13 yrs, but 30K miles. Just upgraded to C90, looking for many more miles.
