I bought my 2003 Volusia, Aug. 2003 and it was the best bike for my money. I still love it, but she really doesn't like cold weather. I am a member of American Legion Riders Post 574 in Hudson Falls, NY and have had several comments by HOG owners who like the look and sound and then I tell them what I paid then watch the look on their faces. I am looking for new pipes hopefully this summer, maybe you'll see me at Americade. The biggest problem for me was the stock seat because the bolt was right on my tailbone, I've had back surgery and brain surgery and the Mustang with the backrest was the best $500 I spent.

I am 61 yrs old and got back into biking after 15 years. I read reviews on bikes for 5 months before deciding on this bike. I was able to test drive it. But I was set on a Ducati, good thing I didn't get that. Even though I am 61, I do believe if it's between you legs you will use it: none of us need to go 130mph, life is hard enough without becoming disabled or brain dead. I like the bike a lot. I have 400 miles on it and it handles very well. I was surprised that it cornered so well, I hit the peg once but that's good because it's a way to let you know to ease up and the peg comes up when you hit it so you can even go down further and it doesn't hit till you are pretty far down. On the freeway, the bike is very stable. I was blown around by the wind but not the bike at 79mph. So I got a windshield that I am putting on today and a rear luggage rack that looks way better than the afterthought passenger seat that is not cool looking. So take it easy, start out slow, and stay slow. Smell the scents in the road and grow up to be 61 like me waiting to dribble in a nursing home, or have a midlife crisis and get another bike at 61, midlife crisis : how many people do you know that are 122 yrs old?

Bike came with the big Suzuki windshield that really does the job well for blocking the wind. Put an inexpensive cruise control/throttle lock on it to give my hand a rest on long rides. These are just things I did for comfort that I needed to make the bike more comfy for myself. All in all, a vey good bike for the money and great value. No real problems to speak of of, I do have problems once in awhile with the bike not wanting to start. Just hesitates some. Has always started though. I have heard of the this problem before, if you want to call it a problem as the bike always starts.

Like I said, this is a great big little bike. The only thing I would change is the gear ratio in the pinion or an overdrive in fifth or sixth gear. Anyway you slice it, I believe the bike has enough torque to handle a taller gear and this would lose the unnecessary revs at highway... read more

I purchased this bike used a few years ago. It's been a great bike. I have ridden in all kinds of weather conditions, and have ridden both short trips and long ones (700 plus miles). The bike is very torquey and has plenty of power. I love the power since I often take my daughter with me on rides. The seat for the rider is pretty comfortable but I have been considering a Mustang seat to increase my daughter's comfort. This particular year model is a four speed, so it is a little short legged. It has plenty of oomph on the highway but is cranking some rpms at highway speeds. The newer one have five speeds. The bike handles great for a cruiser. I am somewhat turned off by the way most cruisers today think heavier is better. I rode my friend's VTX 1800 and it was like driving a truck, just not that fun. However, my 1400 had good lean angle and is light by 1400 standards so it feels very nimble. I also have a 600 Yamaha in case I am feeling a little more sporty.

(That voice was my wife's.) I went on a 4 day tour with it and loved every second. I was completely comfortable the entire trip. I was getting 45 mpg throughout no matter what altitude. The Harley riders were getting a little tender in their hindquarters by the end of the day, but I never did. The stock saddle is amazing and I had no problem keeping up, actually, leading the other cruisers. Plenty of power and awesome reliability. If you are looking for a cruiser, this is it. I'll miss mine.

Added pipes and windshield, and have the resulting jet-issues as a result of the new pipes. Jet change will fix this. However, my big issue is the seemingly high RPM on the freeway; 70 mph sounds like I am red-lined. No tach is really a bummer.
