We have had this bike for almost six years now and the only thing that has ever gone wrong with it was a dead battery. I am more of a two-stroke kind of guy, but this bike will run just like one, and almost as fast as a CR 500. It is the best four-stroke I have ever ridden and handles amazingly....

We have had this bike for almost six years now and the only thing that has ever gone wrong with it was a dead battery. I am more of a two-stroke kind of guy, but this bike will run just like one, and almost as fast as a CR 500. It is the best four-stroke I have ever ridden and handles amazingly. We geared it down to run like a two-stroke and I think it helped it a lot in corners and on hills. I have never been not able to make it up a single hill with it. In the right hands it will go anywhere. KTM makes very high quality products and I am very happy and I would never buy any other new bike other than a KTM.

This bike does exactly what I wanted it to do. It has all the power I need and is usable from bottom to top.
I previously rode a KX250 but found arm pump to be a constant problem. With the 400 it is now history!

I previously rode a KX250 but found arm pump to be a constant problem. With the 400 it is now history!
I ride a lot of steep technical single track and had to constantly fan the clutch on my KX. The 400 will lug down to almost nothing and with a roll of the throttle pull right on up into the strong mid-range. This is the best backcountry exploring bike I have ever ridden. It can crawl like an old XR and scream like a racer.
The only shortcoming is deep sand. The 400 will struggle a bit but is still very rideable and still fast, just takes a bit more aggressiveness and clutch work.
All in all, a great bike for anyone from a casual trail rider to a pro racer. The only bike I would choose over the 400 for all around use is a 300 EXC.

This bike is everything you could want in any situation I have come across. The power is smooth but plentiful, the suspension is very forgiving. I have probably doubled in speed on the tight single track in the month that I have owned this...

This is a rock solid ride, with easy maintanance. However, If your looking to run with modified 250s and 450 Hondas and Yamahas on a motocross track than factor in $500 for a Thumper racing 450 kit!!!!!!!!!! As a 400 the KTM just doesnt have the grunt and being a single cam motor it'll never...

This is a rock solid ride, with easy maintanance. However, If your looking to run with modified 250s and 450 Hondas and Yamahas on a motocross track than factor in $500 for a Thumper racing 450 kit!!!!!!!!!! As a 400 the KTM just doesnt have the grunt and being a single cam motor it'll never rev like the Japanese bikes. But after the Thumper kit, it'll run hard through the midrange and is still a breeze to ride! Another thing of note, if your tracks arent super fast, 18mm triple clamps are the ticket. My KTM settles into turns like my 2000 CR 250 did!!! My only other mod is a Pro Circuit slip on, not alot of gain, but stock is to quiet. With the 450 kit installed this bike is 5 star plus, Happy Hunting MXP

I bought the 400 SX first release year (2000) when only about 500 were imported in the US. I do not race it on the track and prefer Woods Riding mostly. The bike has a smooth tractable power band. I increased the rear sprocket from a 49 to a 52, put a Pro circuit T-4 slip on silencer, Scott's...

I bought the 400 SX first release year (2000) when only about 500 were imported in the US. I do not race it on the track and prefer Woods Riding mostly. The bike has a smooth tractable power band. I increased the rear sprocket from a 49 to a 52, put a Pro circuit T-4 slip on silencer, Scott's steering dampener, revalved the front and rear suspension for Woods riding and run 100 octane race gas. I ride with my friend that has a 2001 YZ426F that I ride often as well. Although his bike certainly has more power I find that I can ride much longer without feeling like I am riding a 2000lb bull in a rodeo. The 400 has power equivalent to a strong 250 but is has all the benefits of a 4 stroke. The back compression in the woods is essential. The KTM 520 is still the big bore brother and has pull-arms-out-of-the-socket feel but for an all day screamer even the pros agree the KTM 400 SX is hard to beat that won't beat you up.
