All I can say is it's totally awesome! My previous bike after a 13 year lull was a '94 SS and all I can say is the 1000DS is worlds apart. The motor spins effortlessly right into the nether regions of the speed and rev limit; it never for a moment feels vague or disoriented in any way. I'm in love. It's not the latest or greatest, but for me it satisfies all needs of a modern biker - speed, handling, reliable and smooth power delivery, encompassing wonderful handling properties which leave the rider looking for more corners and tighter bends in every foray on the open road. I love it and I don't wish to part company any time soon. Here's to an ol' girl with plenty to offer the discerning rider. Show less

First of all this bike is the nicest bike I have ever ridden. The power into the turns and coming out is what this bike is built for. The throttle is hard to get used to but after a couple months of riding your wrist gets used to it. Clutch is stiff... you can get to clicking gears pretty easily. The sound of the Terminogni exhaust is fantastic, even louder and deeper than the stock. Front is a little hard but you can adjust very easily. At 155 lbs and 6' tall this bike fits me perfectly. The bike has got all the great components stock and the attention this bike draws is ridiculous. No need to do much to this bike, I just like the Termignoni exhaust but if I had it to do over again I would go carbon fiber (expensive). Oh yeah and if you can ride very good, this bike WILL hang with the GSXR 750's on the straight aways and will burn almost anything in the turns. Good luck to those who try to hang with the 800ss. Soft tires are a good mod as well. And for all you old farts out there, go buy a touring bike if you're not comfortable, what do you expect. And don't change the handlebars. Very outstanding performance coming out of this Italian Dream Machine. Show less

This is my third bike and first sportsbike so I'm no expert, however if I go by looks, comfort and performance: I'm amazed! my other ride is a 1600 04 mean streak that is great fun and I love her to death but this is a rock steady smooth ride that effortlessly gets along the highway providing me with a natural high second to nothing I've experienced in the past. Comfortable, and personally I think the stock exhaust sounds ok you can still feel it's a Ducati just being within 20 ft of it yet it's silent with nothing to prove. The only small beef I have is a gap in the rear fairing above the tail light, the tail light shines thru the crack and it's a tad unsightly on an otherwise perfect looking machine. easy fixed Summary: There are probably much faster bikes but this one is a dreamy powerhouse and a bit of a chick magnet even over my big chrome cruiser. The more I ride my bike the more I like it. I have seen a couple of these as leftovers, one in the shop in Yorktown, VA. This was the final year and only 115 were made for the US in Sienna Gray. I haven't had to do any major maintenance, just the normal 600 mile and then oil and filters. This thing has a broader power band than a Buell. It pulls away from a stop nicely with 2000 rpm and once you get to 4000 rpm you best be hanging on if you open it up in 1st - 4th gear, 5th and 6th are overdrive gears. The rev limiter kicks in around 8750 rpm. The aluminum swingarm was only on the 2002 model. The Ohlins rear shock was only on the 2002. This bike loves to be ridden like you mean it, it has the usual Ducati high CG due to the rear cylinder sticking straight up, 90 degree V twin. When you do a full racing tuck the bike really feels like it is a part of you. The mirrors get a weird violent vibration below 4000 rpm, around 3500, I guess. The mirrors give you a nice view of your elbows; you have to adjust your position to use them. I have done some 300 mile days and it is actually easier on my tailbone than my Electra Glide. This is a great street bike; it has more useable power on the street than the inline 4 hyper bikes. Who wants to have to shift a million times and keep the revs above 10,000 to commute in city traffic? Get yours before they are all gone! Show less

Every ride on this bike is awesome. I agree with most of the previous reviews with a couple of exceptions. One stated that the rear brake is useless. This is not a bad thing. Many riders will drill their rear rotor or remove rear brake pad material to prevent rear brake lockup. The 800's rear brake will slow you down but I don't think you could ever lock it up. The stock rear brake is perfect for trail braking. I found the Duc comfortable as is maybe because I'm a tall rider and I would suggest to a new owner to wait until you get the feel of the bike before making the decision to install Helibars. I have 200 miles on mine only because I was off the bike for 5 weeks due to a sports injury. The L-Twin has a distinct sound one just has to love. It has plenty of power and torque, but it is more forgiving at the throttle than the in-line fours. The best thing I like about the SS800 though is how it corners. It's like surfing the street. It is as stated previously a lot of bike for the money compared to some of the other bikes available which generally cost more. Show less

I have had this bike since 2001, it was brand new on the showroom floor. I have to say this is one beutiful riding bike. She is great in the corners and has plenty of power everywhere including at the track. This is a Half Fairing version. Show less

I don't personally own this bike, I have an '05 Kawasaki ZZR600 but rode a friend's (look at Suresh's review). The fantastic thing about a Ducati? You get top-of-the-line components OFF THE SHELF with this thing. Brembo brakes, hydraulic clutch, Michelin tires, you name it, this $8000 bike has it. It's uncanny how this bike dives into corners. The feed back in your hands is unbelievable. It's as if you could take 80 mph sweepers with your fingertips all day. Highly recommended! Show less

I just got this bike and love it! Traded in my 01 Guzzi V11 Sport, the Duck is superior in every aspect, even in the break in procedure, this bike is fast but extremely gentle on the power delivery, the tranny unlike my Guzzi is slick and precise, the motor is very quiet very little mechanical noise. The fit and finish is excellent at part with BMW, highest quality components, Brembo, Marsochi etc. The sound is incredible total intoxication! Attention getter every were, you feel like a million bucks on this thing. Many cool features like the tank flips up on hinges and you can work on the engine easily. Macrochiped key, fuel injection is flawless, handling is incredible! Also the bike is very light. Great all around bike. Show less

Bottom line up front, Ducati is the one and only bike I will ever ride and own. I like all models of Ducati, but I am truly enamored with the Super Sport family! Ducati Super Sports are finely crafted machines that exude sexiness with power. People notice my Ducati both visually and audibly. Handling is great whether I'm on a starightaway or straifing curving a country road. I know immature people who like to brag and tell me that my 750SS is slow compared to their bikes, that's when I ask them, "Do you race professionally?" Ten times out of ten they go away. Another tidbit of info, no one and I mean no one ever confuses a Ducati with any other bike. Classic baby!! Show less
