I am the original owner of a 1990 ATK 406E (the ported 6 speed version). It has been ridden extensively in Cross Country (aka Hare Scrambles) events and for trail riding. The bike has held up well except for the exhaust pipe. I continuously have issues with the pipe cracking. The powerband was pipey with the stock pipe but changing to an MX pipe and adding two teeth to the rear sprocket smoothed out the powerband immensely. At top speed there are not many bikes that can keep up. This bike does require you to modify your riding style to accommodate it's quirks. It is DEFINITELY NOT a putt putt slow bike. The harder you push it the better it responds. The frame and components are top notch and extremely reliable. It is a pain to work on though. When I changed the footpegs it was one of those, "to remove the footpegs you have to remove the skidplate, to remove the skidplate you have to remove the master cylinder, to remove the master cylinder you have to remove the pipe, to remove the pipe you have to ... well you get the idea. The bike is still going strong and I still like it.
