2006 KTM 250 XC-W

This is one great bike. It does it all - pulls like a four-stroke, but I don't remember adjusting any valves! It's fast, too; the speedometer said 70MPH, and then I had to let go of the throttle. My last MX bike maybe did 55 as I stretched the cable looking for more. The suspension works very well...

My last MX bike maybe did 55 as I stretched the cable looking for more. The suspension works very well and has lots of adjustment. You can forget the grease for the linkage because there isn't any to maintain. I could go on and on... I think anyone would be happy with this bike.

The KTM 625 SMC is a nice machine. I was shopping for a large displacement single cylinder motorcycle, something fun to ride and not too expensive, and this is it. After looking at other makes and reading reviews, I placed a down payment for this KTM before it even arrived in the showroom. Needless to say, I felt like I was taking a lot of risk, but those thoughts disappeared after my first day with the bike.
At first look, I was impressed. The massive single cylinder engine with water cooling, braided steel hoses (oil and hydraulic lines) and modern suspension with fat tires make for a truly unique looking motorcycle; a Supermotard. The orange and black color scheme, the wide polished wheels, and the twin mufflers exiting the rear fender give an aggressive look. Along with the massive disk brake rotor on the front wheel, this bike attracts curious looks from people.
The bike performs very well. The engine has a lot of power and the bike is light and very easy to handle on winding roads. In the hands of an expert rider, this bike is capable of running with bikes of larger displacement. Despite just having said ample power, I'm investigating aftermarket exhaust systems to open it up a bit without making too much racket. The most irritable item is the throttle limiter (homologated why this bike has it is unusual when there are much more powerful bikes on the market that don't have such a restriction.
The exceptional agility comes at a price however, as this bike is not meant for long trips. The nine-liter gas tank is small and I make frequent stops for fuel to avoid running dry. The seat is narrow and firm and can become uncomfortable after an hour or so of riding. Another limiting factor is the engine's vibration, which wears on me after a while and I've switched to some thicker bar grips to reduce the buzz on my hands.
The bike came with Pirelli MT tires and they appear to be a compromise for riding both on and off road. The have a raised tread to bite in the dirt while having a large lug pattern for pavement. They're Ok, but I don't try to lean aggressively in the turns and they don't work well on rain-grooved roads at 60 to 70 mph. I'll replace these with tires that are more road-worthy in the future.
While not perfect, I enjoy riding this KTM and don't regret spending a little extra for this brand. The quality of this machine is impressive and riding a Supermotard is a heck of a lot of fun.

The stock seat is a little stiff but Enduro Engineering makes a great aftermarket seat. I have not had any problems out of the bike. It is super fast and will jump any jump out there. The handling is good in the turns and on the straight-aways. It handles braking bumps with ease. The good thing about KTM is that they come with all the extras that you would normally buy to put on a stock bike: V-Force 3 reeds, Renthal fat bars, black Excel rims, aftermarket pipe and silencer, gold chain, Magura clutch and Brembo brakes.

The 450 tracks much better than the 250 and in the rocks and roots it just eats them up where the 250 seems unstable and bounces around. The only time I notice the weight difference is putting it on the stand or picking it up after a spill. Just don't crash and you will hardly notice the extra 25 lbs.

The graphics on the 2006 look much better than the past few years, that's another thing I like about this bike. The suspension is very plush and when I'm going through the whoops it goes over them like nothing, dude. Very smooth ride. This bike comes with a really nice pipe while all the other 85s come with those black pipes it corners real nice, too. It is my first bike, and it's real easy to control. AWESOME BIKE KTM

This bike is simply awesome. The bike has an awesome power range and even in the tightest and slowest corners it seems to pull out extremely hard and the power continues all the way down long straights. It took a little while to get used to the slim body but it didn't take long to get the hang of it, and I was amazed who easy it was to ride. The suspension is a little harsh for the first hour or so until things loosen up but after a little tweaking this bike was displaying characteristics of the ultimate weapon. The main thing any new comer will have to get use to with these new big bangers is the art of kick starting these beasts and the huge amount of compression that causes the rear wheel to lock up while breaking, but once you have got use to this all you have to worry about is your arms getting pulled out of their sockets.
