This bike has been one of my favorites. No issues. This bike should be classified as a sports-touring bike. It is powerful, very reliable...and comfortable. Great touring bike. It is high mileage...but wouldn't hesitate to take a crosss-country tour on it. Show less

Love this bike because it's a cruise missle on 2 wheels. Comfortable, quick, and pretty good on the gas. 150hp at the engine is more than enough, even for a short, gravity challenged person. Took this bike in the mountain twisties, highways, and around the Great Lakes. With the cruise control, ABS, heated grips and seat made it a easy choice for my everyday rider - until the snow starts flying. But alas, I'm getting older and this bike is heavy. Moving it around is a little bit of a challenge, but manageable. I think the K-bikes were underrated for what they could do. The in-line 4 cyl really spooled up quick and the next thing you know, you're doing 90 in 3rd gear on a 6 speed transmission. The ride was smooth a butt'ah. Shifting was a little clunky, but if you preload your shift it went thru the gears fine. It was a little pain to do maintenance because of all the tupperware, but that's the same with all these bigger sport-touring and touring bikes (exceptions are the big V twins). Show less

Purchased this 2006 K1200LT with only 31000kms on it. Compared to my 2001 K1200 LT it has much more torque and feels way smoother at all RPM’s. Steering also feels more accurate and intuitive as a result of some changes BMW made to the geometry. Much more modern and useful display as well. Seat comfort is also markedly improved. The electric centre stand works perfectly, and is a welcome addition. Stereo sound is basically the same as my 2001. Hand grips are more comfy than the heavy rubber grips my 2001 had. Also, throttle effort much less than my 2001 making blipping the throttle for downshifting easier. I feel the fit and finish on the 2006 somehow improved, although my 2001 was also great. In short. I would always go for a later LT as opposed to the first generation now that I’ve owned both and can compare. Basically, BMW appears to have given the LT much more power and also improved numerous areas. On another note. I run radials on the LT( Dunlop Road Smart three’s ). Basically the same weight rating as the Metzler Marathon 888 bias ply, but way better handling and comfort (Less choppy). The LT’s chassis deserves radials,they will transform the LT. In short I love the bike. All my other bikes are dedicated sport bikes, so it’s nice to have a great handling touring bike in the garage . Passenger seat awesome as well. The wife loves it. A real class act too. I get compliments all the time. Show less

I'm 59 and a Chopper man since the beginning, until, I had to accept the fact it was time to go for a GT bike. I bought the 1200RT second-hand (20,000 miles) and I can say just one thing: fantastic! It's like a bicycle with the engine of a formula one car. It's easy to pilot, has an unbelievable engine, total comfort and is totally reliable. I regret one thing: I should have bought one earlier. Minus point? Well, when bought new, the options are pretty expensive. Show less

This bike is excellent but single cylinder bikes are not as popular here as in Europe. If you buy one as many people have bought and traded in the past, give the bike a chance and put some miles on it before you decide. I hated mine at first but after a few thousand miles of getting to know it, it's awesome. It's a great all-around bike that can do it all. The only thing is that on this bike I didn't like was the headlight when there are not street lights. It also should have come with fork tube gaitors and a rear shock gaitor. Keep your chain lubed a lot. Show less

I have ridden motorcycles for over 47 years and this K1200LT is the best motorcycle I have straddled. I also have a Harley Davidson Road King which I ride around to be one of the guys but when it comes time to put a cycle on the road for a trip it is time to pack the bags on the LT. The braking system is the best I have ever experienced and the engine power comes on smooth and will wind up as long as you have the guts to hold it open. The power is not rough but is smooth like an expensive touring car line, the BMW or Jaguar. The power is enough to allow you to wave bye-bye to any other touring motorcycle with the mere 1200 cc motor. Gas mileage which is everyone's concern is remarkable also with 60 MPH averages allowing you to have a 56 MPG I received last week on our Tellico breakfast ride. In 2001 I rode my K1200LT to Washington State and a 70 MPH I was averaging 53 MPG on my computer. The Metsler tires are the best motorcycle tires on the market and with the ABS brakes you need their strength and reliability. All the ergonomics of switches and controls have been well engineered and the telelever and paralever suspensions are flawless. This is a warning to anyone looking at a LT, if you ride it you will buy it. Show less

I have spent the last 32 years owning dozens of different bikes. The R1200GS is the hands-down winner by far. The tall saddle not only helps you see better in traffic, but it allows you to corner much better in that it allows you to lean more. The power output is gut-wrenching from take off to rev-limiter (100 mph in third gear). The bike's off road agility is almost frightening in that the only way you can tell that it is off-road is that you can sometimes feel the bumps. It is just as stable off-road as it is on road. You may think you want to own a hog, but if I were you I would invest in a horse - BMW, there is no substitute. Show less

I owned a 2003 BMW K1200 LT for about 2.5 years before moving up to the Adventure. Best all around bike that BMW makes, in my opinion. Just finished 7400 mi, 2 wk trip to west coast and back. Bike performed flawlessly. Handles as good as most sports bikes - great torque, power, can pop wheelie in 2nd gear, but very well behaved in traffic. The only gripe I have is that the standard seat is not comfy for more than an hour. An after market seat is a must. I originally had knobby tires, but opted for Tourance/Anake for a smoother and more stable ride on hard surface. Bike is a bit too heavy to do any serious off road riding, although it will handle hard packed dirt and gravel roads with ease. Very well made and dependable. Show less
