I bouht this bike as soon as it was available. bought it from cycle improvements. Good guys know there stuff. I have torcherd this machine, it has been thrashed through the tight trails of the Ganaraska forest on a regular baisis and last summer i brought it all the way to Alberta and BC threw the rocky mountains. i nearly lost it underneath the muscag. I road it to the highest operational lookout point in north america. I put scott stailess oil filters in and i change the oil religously. Checked valve clearances on occation. i beat on this bike and it wont give up. i recomend it to serious riders looking for the best in everything. was die hard honda , but this will be hard to beat!

Then my second bike started to leak oil bad. I found it to be a loose fastener in the valve cover. Then my hemi joint was installed wrong. I have sold the bike and will never ride a KTM again! For reliability get yourself a Honda XR or Yamaha WR450. I know it doesn't come with the good brakes, suspension, and handlebars and so on, but the engine is reliable and that is the heart of a bike, yes the Hondas XR's are heavy but I rather ride my XR back to the truck than push my KTM.

The KTM 380EXC is an amazing enduro bike. Slim, strong and responsive, the 380 provides the manuverability of a two stroke with the torque of a four stroke. Performs well in tight trials and open roads. Horse power is not a problem if you like it, it has a lot of give. However, working smart with torque will provide middle RPM smooth and fast rides if you wish. The bike does not require open throttle - typical 2T riding. It provides a riding experience with torque known only to four strokers and manuvarability characeristics known only to two strokers. Great bike, period.

I bought the 400 SX first release year (2000) when only about 500 were imported in the US. I do not race it on the track and prefer Woods Riding mostly. The bike has a smooth tractable power band. I increased the rear sprocket from a 49 to a 52, put a Pro circuit T-4 slip on silencer, Scott's steering dampener, revalved the front and rear suspension for Woods riding and run 100 octane race gas. I ride with my friend that has a 2001 YZ426F that I ride often as well. Although his bike certainly has more power I find that I can ride much longer without feeling like I am riding a 2000lb bull in a rodeo. The 400 has power equivalent to a strong 250 but is has all the benefits of a 4 stroke. The back compression in the woods is essential. The KTM 520 is still the big bore brother and has pull-arms-out-of-the-socket feel but for an all day screamer even the pros agree the KTM 400 SX is hard to beat that won't beat you up.

On two tracks the power is awesome(100 mph is reachable with stock gearing). On single tracks the bike is a handful. Lots of power makes it real interesting in the tight woods. A 400 EXC probably would have been better for single tracks but would not have been as much fun in the open terrain. I would definitely recommend this bike to anyone who want a big horsepower thumper. Also the electric start is awesome.
