If you want comfort, you should have been smart enough to buy a Softail in the first place. Anyway, I think the Sporster is an awesome bike and there is a reason it has been around for 50 frickin years. I love mine and love riding in general. It is the most quality and reliable motorcycle I have ever owned.

I bought this carbureted Superglide on ebay almost two years ago (immaculate, 8,300 miles, already fully accessorized). I previously had owned an 883 Sportster, after numerous UJM's (1970's-80's Universal Japanese Motorcycles) and then a 12 year hiatus from cycling. To anyone who wants a Harley and is considering the Sportster as a starting point, do yourself a favor and get a Superglide. It's a lot more bike for just a little more money. The bike has just turned 30,000 miles, with no problems whatever. I have done only the prescribed maintenance plus replacing tires and brake pads, and without Harley's high dealer shop rates. It's a solid, low tech machine. With basic tools you can do your own routine maintenance. With proper care, my Superglide should go a long ways yet. For the kind of riding I do, this bike is ideal. I typically ride one-up 30 or so miles daily, with a 80-100 mile ride once a week and some summer tours of 2,000+ miles. The bike handles the tours nicely (it's not been that long since a 650cc bike was regarded as a big road machine!) and is a dream for evening cruising close to home. However, I would not recommend it without highway pegs or forward controls, as the stock mid-controls are somewhat confining. Also, it is not a suitable machine for two-up touring. Power is ample, but the seating isn't spacious enough for two people to go any real distance in comfort. Every now and then I get the itch to trade for a larger Harley or a metric, but keep coming back to my Superglide. The price difference between this bike and an Electraglide or Road King just isn't justifiable for the kind of riding I do. As for metrics, I've recently tried the Yamaha Road Star and Stratoliner, and the Kawasaki Nomad. They are excellent bikes, and Harley prices are indefensible when compared to them. But they just don't give the almost indescribable feel that the Harley look/sound/pulse does. The Japanese consistently build bikes that are just a little too smooth and refined. If they ever figure this out and correct it, Harley will be in trouble! So I will stick with my Superglide a while longer, and let you know how things look at 50,000!

Since I wrote my last piece on the FXDXT. We have been lucky enough to travel thousands of trouble free miles. One trip that I will never ever forget was in 2003. We shipped our bike from the UK to San Fransisco, rode along the west coast to visit friends in Mount Vernon, Washington state. At the Cascades NP we turned right across the US to Milwaukee, stayed a couple of days for the party, then on down the Mississippi and then back to Chicago for home, we had sunshine every inch of the way and the "T" sport never missed a beat. It's a shame Harley dropped this model from their range. It does it for me and it does so well.

The only mechanical failures were front turn signal light bulb and highbeam indicator bulb. I replaced them, but only found bulb from an H-D dealer for $3.00! I finally replaced my Dunlop OEM front tire after 14,000 miles. Man those tires last! I had a new one installed for $91... what a deal! So it vibrates a little, I Love It!

I couldn't be more satisfied than I am with my '02 Deuce. It looks fantastic and runs and handles equally as well. I chose the Black with red pinstipes and with all the chrome it is quite the eye catcher. I replaced the stock exhaust with Vance&Hines bigshot shorties and had the Stage 1 upgrade performed. I've added chrome controls and billet pegs and a detachable windshield for highway driving. The bike is super comfortable with the forward controls, but the stock seat is a bit stiff and I find myself squirming now and then to find the right spot. I will probably get a solo seat soon and try it. One more downside is the solid aluminum 17inch rear wheel; it is almost impossible to keep clean and almost as impossible to find a custom wheel in 17 inch without mortgaging the house. Other than those two items it is surely the finest bike I have ever ridden.

I don't normally take the time to write reviews; but I feel I should let folks know about this product by H-D, one word: fantastic. I have had my V-Rod since May '02, took delivery at less than MSRP at a time when others were paying a premium- (but that's another story). And I have been very happy from day one, it has been reliable, rides great, and powerful. I took delivery with the Screamin Eagle slip-ons, the K&N air filter and flash. The bike continues to become louder, which I don't care about one way or the other but that seems to be a big deal to some people, I have always like the way it has sounded. It rides real nice and smooth, no vibration and I have ridden over 500 miles in one day and have not had a problem. And that was along mainly back roads and the Blue Ridge parkway. The bike draws attention wherever I go, I am always getting comments like "That is the best looking bike; "Is that a custom, people wave at me with their whole hand, not one finger, and that is after riding this for over a year and a half and it's still happening. It's a big hit at parades and other events I have attended. I have changed to Mobil 1 synthetic oil and it seemed to rev a little quicker and runs cool. I do my own maintenance and the bike has needed very little attention other than oil changes. It has not leaked a drop, other than the time I forgot to tighten the dip stick all the way; I was just in a hurry to get on the road and saw oil on the kick stand at my first gas stop, tightened the dip stick and it solved that issue. Now, this bike does have a small gas tank, and I stop every 100-115 miles to fill up, but I have found that even when I ride with my other Harley buddies they like to stop around that time anyway; for a drink or a bathroom break. Since myself and my friends mainly ride back roads, that's about every hour to hour and a half. I do get over 40 MPG, depending on speed mostly around 42 MPG, so I could go up to 140 before I'd be real close. On one ride to Myrtle Beach for bike week (430 highway miles) I only stopped 3 times and once was for lunch. Of course we stopped because the bagger with the big bore 103ci and I were getting about the same mileage per tank, anyway. This bike does haul butt, I don't do as well gas mileage wise when I am by myself because I have a tendency to get on it too much, and can easily leave most of my friends behind. Overall this is a fun bike and has been very dependable. You do get a little buffeting with the solid front wheel around 18-wheelers; but I have found it really depends on the truck's shape and what they are hauling, some are worse than others; and it sucks to be behind lumber trucks, they drop more crap, but then again that is not an issue only for the V-Rod. I don't use a windshield because I think that's not true riding; I like to feel the wind. But, I do ride with a flip-up full face, for protection. If I were to have to buy another bike it would be another V-Rod, I am very happy with this machine, recommend it highly. Thanks and have fun and ride safe. Dave
