By the way Independence Pass near Aspen is a must see for all- esp on this bike WOW!!

I've been away from riding for 7 or 8 years and finally decided to jump back in. After checking out just about everything on the market, and I mean everything; I decided to get all of them. Sprint ST's are great all'rounders, VFR's are nimble and refined, it's hard to beat the Bandit 1200S for value, the new FZ1 is a fun phenom, and there's more. But then I remembered something my grandpa said..."buy the best and you'll never regret it." Well, I listened and got all that I asked for in the K12: truly sporting, touring capable, highest resale, great durability, and dead sexy! 'Everything' and then some! Picked her up in San Fran and rode the California coast home over 4th of July weekend. (If you ride, the stretch of highway 1 from Carmel to San Simeon should be on your MUST DO list, and soon. It is amazing!!) The K12 with a rusty pilot, 2-up with tank bag and fully loaded hard bags caught and passed many uncomfortable sport bikes, got 40 mpg, and most importantly - didn't adversely effect my sex life in the slightest. Yes, you'd think it was priced by the pound, and, yes, it is a heavy bike, but it has more than enough muscle to overcome it. That being said: if you can convince yourself that there's a better bike, then you're probably just trying to justify the purchase of a lesser one. Good Luck! I couldn't do it. PS-the girlfriend is happy, too.

I bought the 2001 r1100rl-black w/white pin stripes, chrome valve covers. This bike has to be among the best "naked standards". I've put 2600 miles on mine-added a parrabellum windshield 3 months ago. Great handling, brakes good power and I now get 38 mpg city and 48 mpg hwy. negatives:...

I've put 2600 miles on mine-added a parrabellum windshield 3 months ago. Great handling, brakes good power and I now get 38 mpg city and 48 mpg hwy. negatives: BMW accessories are pricey, non-BMW accessories are few, foot controls are small (you get used to them though) and exhaust is too quite for my liking, although my neighbors appreciate this. I've read of r1100r's with 150,000 miles on them and I plan to put quite a few on mine.

I've got over 2500 miles on it now. After the 600-mile checkup the second gear slip into neutral stopped. The vibration that many are complaining about has started to calm down with every 500 miles I put on it. The Motorcycle handles great for a standard bike. Solid in the turns with a strong pull out of the lean. I have the R1100RL that has the Bavarian paint scheme. Black with white pin stripes. The biggest thing that attracted me to the motorcycle was the amount of thought that went into the suspension and brakes. I've heard a lot of people complain about this bike. But it has been a great commuter motorcycle in all weather. On the weekends during all day rides. About 6+ hours the bike shines on the back roads. The brakes give confidence and the suspension removes any brake dive with out any sacrifice in front wheel traction even under hard breaking (panic) conditions. I would suggest this bike to the Novice biker to expert rider. If only a naked standard bike will do. This is the bike you have to test drive after all the others. And yes... the pegs do scrape well before the cylinders even get close to the road. :4)

I've had the bike for 1 month and put 700 miles on it. Just had the first service done. Plenty of power no matter what gear you're in and holds very well in turns even at low speeds. Only gripe I have is the transmission - it could shift a little more positively - it should improve after break-in. don't try and downshift at high rev's like on a sport bike with a chain drive - it'll feel like the rear wheel wants to kick out. The bike is certainly a lot faster than it looks - guys I ride with on sport bikes can attest to that. Very quiet and smooth torquey engine. Averaging about 40 mpg so far, but it should improve. I would highly recommend this bike to anyone who wants a standard that holds the road, handles and boogies.

Minus- Terrible lean surge problem, fuel injection glitches caused stalling, somewhat more vibration and buffeting than I expected, slightly top heavy and the catalytic converter melted the sole of my boot. All in all, a nice bike, and an interesting experience, but I sold it after one year and probably won't ever get another.

Three months ago I purchased a new LT and have had troubles with the bike and dealer ever since. On the first occasion I went to start my LT sitting in my heated garage to go for a ride and the bike was completely devoid of power. The bike had been sitting for three days. Battery dead? I called the dealer (Mortons BMW) They said recharge. I did and it did not work. I had it towed to the dealer. They said an electrical relay went bad. Very rare! fixed it. When i got the bike home I discovered that somebody had dropped my LT and there was damage to the fairing and other parts. I called the dealer and they admitted they had dropped the bike. Now I have a repeat of the same rare electrical problem and my bike dead again. I now have no confidence that I can take a long trip on this machine without a high risk of being stranded. By the way, when it runs it's a great bike. I give it 1 star. JBHawkr

But at slow speeds watch out! don't try to pull a "Euro". Stop only with the wheel dead straight. The side panels cost $1500.00. Ergos are overall excellent except the foot pegs could be a little lower. Saddlebags will not fit full-face helmet.
