I'm totally happy with my Chief and wouldn't trade it for anything. You have to ride any bike the way it was designed to be ridden, if you don't , then you will experience things that are nobody's fault but your own. Yes the footboards drag if you "rocket" around town. They've never been a problem on any highway or backroad that I've been on. And my other bike is a "built" '78 Triumph Bonnie that will give todays "cafe" bikes a lesson in humility.

I read this last review by doc in Santee. I think he needs to try again--I found his ride under 2000 Suzuki Intruder 1500 lc. Maybe that says it all--maybe he has real bike envy. I read this last review by doc in Santee. I think he needs to try again--I found his ride under 2000 Suzuki Intruder 1500 lc. Maybe that says it all--maybe he has real bike envy. The Indian Chief is an excellent piece of machinery and I blow away most Japanese v-twins with my stock Chief (only removed the restrictor on the carb)--so I guess it can go!! Most new products have bugs, but with mine over a year now, there are very few problems and nothing of any significance. Mr. Doc, get over it and go ride your bike and stay off the good ones!!

I wouldn't trade my 2000 Chief for anything out there. What a great ride. I wouldn't trade my 2000 Chief for anything out there. What a great ride. I think a lot of the 'clone" talk comes from guys who ride the other American classic and feel the need to protect something, they don't -- they're great bikes too. Reality is though, that there is no other bike like this one. Some of the comments obviously (no Harley rider would complain about the pull of the clutch!!) come from those who own overseas bikes -- this is American iron, it is different. I hope you all like your bikes, that is what riding is all about. I just happen to think that this one has it all for me. Great ride, great looks and great handling. If you experience something different, so be it! Find the bike that's great for you and let's get back to riding!!!

I have had my 1999 Indian Chief now for a couple months, and it is a sheer joy to ride and own. I honestly believe that the other posts that put this awesome bike down are Harley riders that are Jealous and envious of such a fine looking ride. Sure it has a few MINOR problems, but even Harley can't get the bugs out of their bikes. For proof look at those new engines they have. The Indian has a S&S Superstock 88 in it. A very good engine too. It has more way more billet and chrome on it from the factory than a stock Harley. As for the price! Look at what Harley riders spend on their rides AFTER they plunk down 20K. The Chief comes with all those extra goodies. As for the floorboard scraping? Harleys scrape too. This is not a crotch rocket. It is a CRUISER. But it is a FAST cruiser. With no modifications it will lay rubber in second. Take the restrictor plate out of the carb and this beast flies. My only real complaint is that it's hard to see the poorly lit speedometer at night.

Can't help it. I was disappointed with my first ride on the Chief. The dealer talked me into it so off I went. The clutch pull is ok; if you can't pull it maybe you're' not big enough to ride it. Lots of vibration in the highway boards. When I hammered it to get some scoot I thought it was a joke. Maybe some aftermarket stuff will make it ok, but the stocker I rode felt loose, vibraty, and sluggish. Oh, my eyes are bad, I would need a larger speedometer gauge cause sometimes I use em.

Well I broke down and test rode one of these beasts. What a disappointment!! My first question was "Is the clutch supposed to be this heavy"? If you drive this in traffic you'll end up with a left arm like popeye. The bars are too wide, I drug the floor boards in the parking lot, and the seat... read more

If you drive this in traffic you'll end up with a left arm like popeye. The bars are too wide, I drug the floor boards in the parking lot, and the seat was awful. The bike is pretty, if you want to ride in a straight line at low speed and look cool then this is your bike.

I test rode this bike. It bottomed out big time and every curve I took the floorboard were scraping. It rattled, felt cheesy and insubstantial. A lot of dealers are getting out of these so you can buy one for around $18995. After I found out the saddlebags cost $2000!!! I went bought a Nomad... read more

After owning my chief 11 months and 9000 miles I am very regretful of my purchase. This machine (with exception to the engine) has been a constant source of trouble. The placement of the kickstand and the floorboards make this bike very unsafe to ride on less than straight roads. I am trying at present time to trade this machine for something more roadworthy but it did not retain it's resale value as promised by the dealer when I bought it.
