It takes off like a rocket, but its limitations in the high end become aparent(maybe I should have got the 900). It handles incredibly! I dont see how I could have made a better choice than with this Duc as a first street bike. My only complaint has to do with the long time in getting parts for these bikes. Here in Minnesota we only have 4 or so months of quality riding time, and my Monster was sitting in the shop for 6 weeks waiting for a kickstand kill switch that went bad(an in warranty/no cost fix)!

I have put 1500 miles on it and love it to death. This bike has excellent suspension, power, looks, and feels like you are riding on rails. I have had no problem with it - very reliable. The riding position takes a while to get adjusted to, but once you relax, tuck in and lay on the tank, and hit the throttle - the bike hankles and seems to like to go fast. Excellent bike

I bought a leftover 2001 900ss (full fairing) this spring and I can't ride it enough. It is incredible on the road and the track. Despite the price, you get every dollar worth in performance. A little more aggressive position than the jap bikes but easy to ride and many adjustable options (from levers to suspension) to make it a great track bike as well. As for the HP, a few mods here and there give it plenty to keep me satisfied. The key with this bike is the torque and sound. Makes for a very fun bike that turns heads whenever I go out. To the rider who got blown away by an R6, I suggest that it is more of a slow rider problem than a slow bike problem. Get out to the track and learn to ride!

And the Ducati is by far the best handling biker I have ever rode it might not be the fastests bike I have owned but who wants to ride in a straight line anyway real racing is done on a track not the drag strip this is where the Duc excels in places like VIR. Anyone can ride fast and not turn the bike a real motorcyclist can take hairpins and the chicanes. Newman

I put the Ducati titanium pipes and performance chip in and it makes a diference in power as well as sound. I also put an Ohlins shock on the rear and bought the mono seat cowl. The seat cowl transform the looks of the bike and I highly recommend every '99-02' ss owner to go to Ducati.com and get it. If you love your Duc, dont let the brake and clutch fluid get dark. Just put a couple of paper towels into the containers and soak the stuff out after every third ride. But dont pull the levers when doing this.

I moved up from a Honda ACE because I wanted something with a lot more sport, a comfortable tourer and something that gets looks. This bike is great in all three areas. I'm 6'1", 225lbs and find the sitting position to be very comfortable. This is a much better highway speed (65-85 MPH)ride then my cruiser. I got a great deal on a leftover 2001. Paid $8200 + $400 prep with 24 month unlimited mile warranty and 24 free maintenance. Beat the hell out of the 2002 Honda Interceptor I was considering plus the Ducati comes with hard bags! Only thing to get use to is the noisey dry clutch at idle. Will update when I get more miles on the bike.

I Purchased a 2000 half faired 900SS in Dec 2000. Im 45 and I have owned 10 motorcycles since I was 14. The Duck has 11000 miles on her now and she just keeps getting better. Power comander II, FBF carbon Fibre cans, with SS headers. K&N air filter with lotsa holes drilled in the top of the airbox. No problems except two tickets in 13 months. I ride with a group up in Georgia sometimes and I have no problem hanging with the faster bikes until the speeds exceed 130. Around town and in the curves she is as fast as I am. I seldom get to use the motor to her full potential. But, the handling is there all the time. I have never owned a bike that makes me smile like this one. Sure the R-1 has more HP , but there are other reasons to own a motorcycle. The Duck massages those other reasons better than most. If drag racing is what you want to do, then go for one of the others...But if you are looking for a motorcycle with soul, then maybe the duck is for you. Oh did I mention the sound?
